Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the guiding-in and guiding-out loss of light by forming the end surface of an optical fiber, which is to be inserted so that it is coupled optically with an optical element in a package, slantingly to an optical axis. CONSTITUTION:Light traveling in an optical fiber 2 is reflected totally by its end surface formed slantingly for total reflection, and consequently its optical path is flexed, so that the light is photodetected by a photodetecting element 4. Since the beam diameter of the light flexed by the total reflection end surface is nearly equal to a core diameter, it is less than the photodetection diameter of the photodetecting element, so that flexed light is photodetected with low loss. A pipe 5 for airtight sealing and the optical fiber 2, and a tightly sealed package 1 are connected mutually by being fused by using, for example, soft glass for airtight sealing.
