CONSTITUTION:In an electrochromic dedisplay (ECD) element, an electrode substrate for display having an EC material formed on a substrate 2 having a transparent electrode 1, a counter electrode substrate formed by providing a counter electrode EC layer 6 made of a material similar to the said EC substance on an electrode 5 formed on a substrate 4 of glass, etc., are arranged oppositely, and an electrolyte 8 and a porous back plate 9 at need are arranged in the gap. Further, the 3rd electrode 10 is formed on the display electrode substrate or counter electrode substrate in the element. For the 3rd electrode, carbon containing magnanese oxide is used and the electrode is connected to a potential higher than that of the counter electrode in a stationary state. The application of voltages to the counter and 3rd electrode eliminates the need for potential measurement.
