Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an energy absorbing mechanism of good efficiency, by providing a stopper ring and tapered part, having the wedge action, in a sliding location of shaft and pipe bodies of relatively slidable constitution.
CONSTITUTION: The lower part of a steering shaft 2 is supported by a bearing to a car body 4 through a lower bracket 5 and a holder 6 of pipe body. The holder 6 rotatably and slidably supprts the steering shaft 2 through a bearing 13. A tapered part 15 is formed partially in the shaft 2 in the vicinity of the holder, and a grooved part 16 of wedge-shaped section is formed by said tapered part 15 and the tapered part of the holder 6. To a position of minimum diameter part in the tapered part 15 at the side of the shaft 2, a stopper ring 17 is equipped and held between the both tapered parts 14, 15 of the grooved part 16.
