Abstract

PURPOSE: A direct current deriving mode liquid crystal display element that is made by using a liquid crystal composition consisting of a specific mixed liquid crystal and a charge-transfer complex, thus having electrical conductivity necessary for dynamic scattering and showing high chemical stability, long life and good response properties.
CONSTITUTION: A ternary liquid crystal mixture consisting of a phenylcyclohexane of formula I (R, X are alkyl), a biphenylcyclohexane of formula II and an azoxy compound of formula III (R1, R2 are alkyl) is combined with a charge-transfer complex made from di-n-butylferrocene and 2,4,5,7-tetranitro-9-fluorenone as an agent for giving electrical conductivity to produce the objective liquid crystal composition. The optimal weight ratio of the mixed liquid crystal is 8/2W4/6 of (phenylcyclohexane + biphenylcyclohexane)/azoxy compound.
