Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an austenite steel with superior oxidation resistance at high temp. by restricting the contents of S and O which deteriorate the oxidation resistance remarkably.
CONSTITUTION: This austenite steel contains 7W45% Ni, 15W30% Cr, <0.008% S+O, <0.005% O and inclusions which are more stable than MnS at high temp. S exists in the form of MnS, and this MnS is converted into Cr-Mn-O at high temp. The resulting free S is concd. on the steel surface and at the grain boundaries, and a Cr deficient layer is formed around each inclusion to exert unfavorable influence on the oxidation resistance at high temp. Free S itself is oxidized as an oxidation starting point. On the other hand, O is converted into oxide or oxysulfide together with an active element such as Cr or Si, hinders the diffusion of the element to the steel surface part, and inhibits the production of oxide on the surface. O is diffused from the interface between steel and oxide scale under dissociation partial pressure of oxide, etc. and causes internal and grain boundary oxidations. The perfect removal of S and O is practically impossible, and S and O are partially converted into stable compounds at high temp., so said upper limits are decided in practical effects.
