PURPOSE:To indicate definitely acceptance or rejection of a limit of measurement by estimating a maximum particle size obtainable previously from a measuring condition with a register that stores the measuring condition, an automatic part and a program part in a measuring device for particle size distribution using a precipitation method. CONSTITUTION:Various constants that serve as measuring conditions are inputted with a keyboard 13 and stored in a register 7. Further by substituting various constants in a Stokes's equation in an arithmetic part 10 according to a program part 10 to permit a measured maximum particle size to be calculated, by comparing the result with a table for particle sizes that was set previously with a setting device 8 and by selecting a particle size that is equal to or is smaller than but the closest to a calculated maximum particle size, the resulted value is made to be an actual maximum particle size. If this value is <=200mum, a Reynolds number is then calculated, and if <=0.6, the measuring condition is considered that it was satisfied, and thus the measured maximum particle size selected from the particle size distribution table is indicated on an indicator 11. Here an operator can recognize whether the upper limit for measurement coincides with the measuring range that is a target or not, and if coinciding, permits a motor to rotate and executes a centrifugal sedimentation method.
