Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate two kinds of liquids with a simple device, by making a float, positioned at the interface between the kinds of liquids separated in a closed vessel, to act as a seal at the time of liquid discharging.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of water and mineral oil is forced into a closed separating tank C from (e) by opening valves α and β and closing a valve γ, and is left at rest till the mixture is separated into two layers of water layer B and mineral oil layer A by closing the valve α. A float (d) has an intermediate specific weight between the specific gravity 1 of water and 0.8 of the mineral oil, and is positioned at the interface between the layers A and B. Next the oil A is discharged from a liquid extracting port (a) at the highest part of the oil A by opening the valves α and β to force water into the tank C from a liquid extracting port (b) at the lowest part of it till the port (a) is sealed by said float (d). Then the valve γ is opened to dischage the water B from the extracting port (b) at the bottom. The float (d) is desirable to be close to the perfect sphere, and the relation between the radius R1 of the float and the radius of curvatures R2 of the liquid extracting parts (a) and (b) to be R1≤R2.
