NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formulaI.
USE: An intermediate for preparing 1-(5-oxohexyl)-3,7-dimethyl-xanthine useful as a remedy for circulatory organs having a vasodilating action or a medicament for circulatory organs having a promoting action on the deformation state of erythrocyte.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II is acetylated with acetyl chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g., AlCl3, etc.) in a solvent such as dichloromethane, etc. at -10W40°C, to give a compound shown by the formulaI. The amount of the Lewis acid used is 6W10 equivalents, preferably 7W8 equivalents based on the compound shown by the formula II. The amount of acetyl chloride used is preferably equivalent W1.5 equivalent based on the compound shown by the formula II. The compound shown by the formula II is obtained by reacting 3-bromo-1-butene with an alkali metal salt of 3,7-dimethylxanthine easily in high yield.
