Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a heat-sealed connection part superior in strength by achieving heat sealing connection of an optical fiber while blowing clean gas. CONSTITUTION:End parts 3A and 3B of optical fibers 1A and 1B are opposed to each other lengthwise and then heated and melted by the discharge of discharge electrodes 5M and 5N, thus performing heat sealing connection. In this case, clean gas is blown from injection pipes 6X and 6Y to the end parts 3A and 3B of the optical fibers and in this state, their end surfaces 4A and 4B are butted and heat-sealed. As a result, no dust in the air is stuck to the connection part and some sheath layers, even if remaining at the end parts 3A and 3B, are blown away to prevent the mixing and sticking of impurities; and quenching causes uniform compression strain at the surface layer part of the heat-sealed connection part, so a decrease in the strength of the connection part is prevented.
