Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a granitic or mosaic pattern on the surface of a glass ceramic, by coating the surface of a molded glass ceramic article with a composition consisting of a compound of Ag, Cu and V, and heating the resultant film.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a molded article of a glass ceramic containing an alkali metal, e.g. Na or K, before the crystallization is coated with a composition containing a compound, e.g. Ag2SO4 or Cu(NO3)23H2O, or a compound convertible into V2O5 on heating, e.g. NH4VO3, with a viscous agent, e.g. methyl cellulose, and a wetting agent, e.g. water, in the form of a paste or slurry. The coated article is then heated to 500°C or above to crystallize the ceramic and form V2O5 produced from the compound of Ag or Cu, and a melt. The surface of the molded ceramic article is then wetted, and ions of Ag or Cu are partially subjected to the ion exchange with alkali ions of the ceramic to form a granitic or mosaic pattern.
