Abstract

PURPOSE: To maintain a groove always in a home position and prevent the occurrence of insufficient width and the decrease in yield by providing a roll stand which is built with disc rolls for grooving movably in the width and parallel directions of an ingot.
CONSTITUTION: The end part position of an ingot 8 is detected by an ingot position detector 13, and a roll stand 5 is moved in the width directin of the ingot 8 by a driving device 12 in such a manner that the bladelike projections 1 of disc rolls 2, 2' are located in the splitting positon of the width (b), (b'). In this state, a screw- down device 4 is operated to press the surfaces of the ingot 8 by the bladelike projections 1, thereby forming grooves 9. When the ingot 8 moves in the width direction on account of crooked running or the like, this movement is detected by the detector 13, and the roll stant 5 makes correcting movement. Thereby, the bladelike projections 1 of the disc rolls 2, 2' are maintained always in the splitting positions of the width (b), (b').
