Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a device which causes less degradation in response speed and is long in life by inserting a cation exchange substance holding the same cation as that of a supporting electrolyte beforehand in the electrolyte of an electrochromic display (ECD) device. CONSTITUTION:A cation exchange resin or a cation exchangeable inorg. compd. holding the same cation as that of an electrolyte (LiClO4) or the like is beforehand inserted in the electrolyte by enclosing a counter electrode 6 between a background plate 4 and a rear glass substrate 7 on the substrate 7 side of an ECD device. Then, as the flickering times of the ECD increase, the cations other than said Li are produced by the electrochemical corrosion of the counter electrode 6, whereby the decrease in the concn. of the Li ions and the degradation of the response characteristics of the ECD are prevented and the device of longer life is obtained.
