Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the surplus charge and the signal charge from mixing with each other by a method wherein the travelling distance of surplus charge due to the diffusion thereof is reduced when the surplus charge is transferred from the vertical signal line to the sink drain. CONSTITUTION:The charge absorbing mechanism comprising the sink control gate 16 adjoining the embedded gate 13 of the transfer gate 12 to absorb the surplus charge and the sink drain 17 as well as the horizontal CCD (charge coupling element) resistor 6 are provided. The gate 12 and 16 are on level while phi1 of the storage region 9 is off level when the surplus charge flown down into the vertical signal line 3 is transferred to the sink drain 17 through the intermediary of the transfer gate 12 and the said gate 16. The potential is made to reduce stepwise from the transfer gate 12 to the said gate 16 and the sink drain 17 while phi1 being on level, the surplus charge will not flow down into the storage region 9 of phi1 reducing the travelling distance of the surplus charge due to the diffusion thereof to accelerate the surplus charge to the sink drain 17.
