Abstract
PURPOSE:To lessen the driving power of the function part of an optical waveguide to reduce the loss of connection to an optical fiber, by changing the width and the thickness of the end part of the optical waveguide layer gradually to make a trumpet-shaped expanded end face. CONSTITUTION:A refractive index controlling substance such as metallic titanium having a refractive index higher than that of a light transmitting dielectric substrate 21 is stuck onto the substrate 21, and the titanium film has the width of the end part expanded gradually by the photolithographic technique to make an upper-face diffusion source 22. The refractive index controlling substance cnsisting of metallic titanium is stuck to a side face 23 where the width of the upper-face diffusion source 22 is expanded, and the titanium film is expanded in the direction of the depth of the substrate by the photolithographic technique to make a side-face diffusion source 24. the substrate 21 is subjected to the heat treatment to form an optical waveguide where the end part has the width and the thickness changed gradually and is expanded into a trumpet shape, thereby lesening the driving power of incorporated optical switch and etc. and reducing the loss of connection to an optical fiber.
