Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula[R is -CH2OR', -CH(OR')2 (R' is lower alkyl, aralkyl)].
EXAMPLE: 7-Dimethoxymethylcamptothecin.
USE: Carcinostatic agent.
PREPARATION: 7-Hydroxymethylcamptothecin is treated with an acid such as sulfuric, hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid in a lower alcohol such as methanol, ethanol or n-propanol or an aralkyl alcohol such as benzyl or phenethyl alcohol to give the compound of the formula. 7-Dialkoxymethylcamptothecin is readily obtained using inexpensive reagents without using an oxidizing agent.
