Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an oligokeratin useful as a cosmetic base material for hair, etc. at a low cost without requiring the purifying step, by treating a fibrous reduced keratin reduced without collapsing the orginal fibrous shape with a proteolytic hydrolase.
CONSTITUTION: A fibrous keratin, e.g. wool, feather or hair, is reduced in a reaction medium, e.g. water and/or an alcohol, with the original fibrous shape retained. The reduced fibrous keratin is then hydrolyzed with a proteolytic hydrolase, preferably an acidic enzyme, e.g. pepsin, in water at 35W40°C at a pH ≤6 to give the aimed oligokerationous substance. The reducing reaction is preferably carried out with a reducing agent, e.g. mercaptoethanol, at a pH of 1W8 in an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen.
EFFECT: No use of a swelling agent or dissolution assistant is required for the keratinous substance, and the reduced keratin is easily separated.
