Abstract

PURPOSE: To densely sinter metal powder into a rool and form these into one piece by disposing metallic capsules to the roll body and roll supporting parts and subjecting the packed metallic powder to hot hydrostatic pressing.
CONSTITUTION: Annular capsules 4, 4' are disposed on the respective outside circumferences of the roll body 2 and roll supports 3, 3' of a solid roll core material 1, and predetermined metallic powders 6, 6' are packed in the annular spaces 5, 5' thereof. The capsules 4, 4' and the core material 1 are secured by welding 8. Here, deaerating pipes 9, 9' are provided to the capsule cap bodies 4c, 4c'. The packing density of the powder is about 60W75%, and the residual air is deaerated. Thence, this is loaded into a hot hydrostatic pressing furnace and is subjected to required treatment, in which it is advantageous to treat the roll body 2 and the roll supporting parts 3, 3' in a divided state. Upon completion of the treatment, the assembly is taken out from the furnace, and the metal capsules 4, 4' are removed by means such as machining, thence the roll is subjected to grinding of the sintered layer surface, hardening, tempering, etc.
