Abstract
PURPOSE: The intramolecular condensation of 4-keto-2-pentenal is, when necessary, followed by protection of the hydroxyl to produce the titled compound, which is used as a synthetic intermediate of medicine such as prostaglandin or agricutual chemical using a readily available raw material in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The ketoaldehyde of formula I, which is readily derived from readily available and inexpensive 2-methylfuran through 2,5-dihydro-2,5-dimethoxy- 2-methylfuran, is subjected to intramolecular condensation and the hydroxyl of the product is, when necessary, protected to produce the cyclopentenone of formula II (R is H, protecting group) in high yield. The product is made to react with an organocopper compound of R2Cu (R2 is 1W20C organic group) in a nonprotonic inert organic solvent in the presence of a trivalent phosphorus compound to produce the cyclopentenone of formula III used as an intermediate of prostaglandin in high yield.
