Abstract

PURPOSE: To heat-treat coal effectively and economically, by predrying highly hygroscopic coal of low carbon content before rapid heating with a mixture of part of a rapid heating gas with a high-temperature air after heat exchange with waste gas as drying gas.
CONSTITUTION: Coal to be treated and drying gas are fed to a fluidized bed 2 to predry the coal. A mixture of a rapid heating gas at 500W850°C from a line 14 with high-temperature air from a line 15 after the indirect heat exchange with an outlet gas from a fluidized bed 4 at a temperature of 150W350°C and an oxygen concentration of 12W20vol% is used as the drying gas. The coal is rapidly heattreated at a heating rate of 100°C/min or more to give a moisture content of 0W5wt% at 300W 500°C. The heat-treated coal is then cooled rapidly in a fluidized bed 7 at a cooling rate of 50°C/min to 250°C or below and taken out of a line 30. The dehydration ratio in the predrying stage is preferably 60W80% based on the total of the ratios in the predrying and the rapid heating stages.
