Abstract

PURPOSE: A sponge base for medicine that is prepared by impregnating a sponge which is made of a high-molecular substance, showing tackiness, when dissolved or gelled in water, with a sticky and oil-soluble high-molecular substance, thus showing improved staying and sticking properties in body cavities such as oral or naval cavity.
CONSTITUTION: A sponge of high-molecular substance (A) that dissolves in water or gels in water to show tackiness such as polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone and/or methylcellulose is impregnated with an oil-soluble high-molecular substance (B) such as polyisobutylene to produce a sponge base for medicine that has high adhesion to mucous membranes locating in body-fluid-rich organs such as oral or naval cavity, according showing high residential property, further good flexibility and enough strength, thus being used for applying to body cavities. The base is prepared by, e.g., adding an oil layer containing substance B to an aquous layer containing the above high-molecular substance A to form an oil-in-water type emulsion and freeze drying the emulsion.
