Abstract

PURPOSE: A rubber composition which can be vulcanized into a bubble-free vulcanizate having improved compression set, prepared by compounding EPDM with both quick lime and a higher saturated fatty acid.
CONSTITUTION: One hundred (100)pts.wt. of EPDM is compounded with both 1W 20pts.wt. of quick lime and 2.5W10pts.wt. of a C710 higher saturated fatty acid. As the quick lime used, one having a particle size of below 150μ is preferred. This compounding is effective to prevent formation of bubbles of water in a vulcanization system under a substantially zero external pressure. The C710 higher fatty acid (for example stearic acid) is required to be a fatty acid which is low in unsaturated acid content, because unsaturated acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid prevent vulcanization, lower tensile strength, etc. of vulcanizates and cause oxidative deterioration.
