Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber with high dimensional accuracy free from deformation by putting a base material rod into a jacket pipe, uniting them to a body at a temp. where the pipe softens and contracts the diameter, and carrying out continuous melting at a higher temp. CONSTITUTION:Base material rod 2 is put into jacket pipe 1. Pipe 1 is introduced into circular heating element 3 such as electric furnace from the sealed end at a fixed speed and heated with element 3 kept at about 1,500-1,600 deg.C, whereby pipe 1 is softened, contracted in the diameter, and united with rod 2. Without passing through a cooling process united pipe 1 and rod 2 are heat melted at about 1,900- 2,100 deg.C with circular heating element 4 placed near element 3, and the melt is drawn into a fine optical fiber. Thus, rod 2 is prevented from being deformed and moved, so the resulting core is not deformed elliptic.
