Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a composite steel plate combined with both characteristics of abrasion resistance and toughness by filling an abrasion resistant metal on an easy-to-weld base steel plate closely adhered onto a water-cooled backing strip by an open arc welding method through single layer deposition while performing force cooling.
CONSTITUTION: In general, a base steel plate 1 of 4W10mm thickness comprising ordinary mild steel or the like is closely adhered onto a copper-made backing strip 7 and is sandwiched by keep plates 3, 3 from both sides. Transverse wedges 4, 4 are then driven and the plate is fixed by means of lock bolts 6. Next, a longitudinal wedge 5 is further driven to restrain the steel plate by means of the backing strop 7. While the backing strip 7 is being forcibly cooled by the cooling water injected from the upper part of a piping 8 over its entire surface, the open arc is formed by the flux-cored wire 11 which is being let off from a welding nozzle 13, whereby the filling by welding is performed on the steel plate 1. The deposition filling onto the steel plate 1 is accomplished by advancing the nozzle 13 by means of a carriage 18 from, for example, the right end of the steel plate 1 toward the left while weaving the same in the steel plate width direction. As a result, the composite steel plate, particularly thin-walled and lightweight composite steel plate that can be easily mounted by weldig to parts requiring reinforcing are easily obtained.
