Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a high-quality optical fiber with a good reproducibility by a method wherein a laser beam scans variations in optical strength, which is detected by a photoelectric element to regulate a burner flame in its radial expansion so that the refractive index of an optical fiber matrix is controlled. CONSTITUTION:A sinewave reference signal is formed so that its phase matches the phase of light scanning. When the square wave rises and falls, the respective voltages of the reference signal are sampled and held. The difference in both the voltages is taken instead of the pluse width thereby to obtain a signal voltage in proportion to the width of flame expansion. This signal voltage is input to the control circuit 22 which stores the predefined standard signal voltage 23. The control circuit 22 compares and amplifies the two signals. If an error signal is generated at the output, the signal is fed back to the motor drive circuit 24, which drives the motor 17 to cause the protective tube 15 to move in the arrow direction 18 or 18'. The motor continues to drive until the error signal become 0 so that the width of burner flame is controlled to reach the predetermined value.
