Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent connection losses by inserting and fixing the fiber end into a cap of a material of high hardness then polishing the end face, mounting the same to a sleeve of the same material of the cap and opposedly connecting these. CONSTITUTION:The end of an optical fiber to be connected is inserted and fixed into the precision bore of a size approximate to the diameter of the fiber of a cap (a) comprising a material (quartz, crystal, alumina single crystal or the like) of >=7 deg. Morse hardness. After the surface of said end is polished, it is mounted to a sleeve (b) fitting to the cap (a) of the same material as that of the cap (a) and the polished end surfaces of the fibers are opposed face to face, thereby the fibers are connected. Since the cap (a) of materials of >=7 deg. Morse hardness is used, polishing is finished to high accuracy and further the abrasion during use is less and this makes it possible to prevent the occurrence of connection losses.
