Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the cleaning efficiency of exhaust gas and suppress a generation of harmful components after an engine is started, by feeding the exhaust gas to a catalytic converter through a bypass line and promoting the warming-up operation when the engine is in its warming-up operation.
CONSTITUTION: When an engine is in operation warming-up, the bimetal element 47 undergoes no change and a valve rod 45 is pressed leftward by a spring 46, so the second chamber 36 is linked to an intake manifold 9 through paths 56, 48. While the first chamber 35 is communicated with an intake duct 21 through a path 57. Because of a small degree of opening of a throttle 14, the intake duct 21 is at a pres sure almost equal to the atmospheric pressure, and the intake manifold 9 is at a negative pressure. This causes a diaphragm 33 to be pressed into the second chamber 36 to allow a rod 34 to open a waste gate valve 29, and the exhaust gas is fed to a catalytic converter 24 through a bypass pipe 26 without passing through a turbine T of a turbocharger 13.
