Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an aqueous solution of a thermosetting resin excellent in paper wet-strength improving effect, storage stability and recoverability of broke, by reacting a specified copolymer with a specified dialdehyde.
CONSTITUTION: One mol of the amido groups of a copolymer of formula III, wherein p and q are integers which provide a ratio, p/(p+q), of 0.05W0.5, intrinsic viscosity at 30°C in 1N-NaNO3, of 0.1W0.4, prepared by copolymerizing a cationic monomer of formula I, wherein R1 is H or CH3, R2W4 are each CH3 or CH2CH3, X is Cl, Br or CH3SO4 and n is 2W6, with a vinylamide of formula II, wherein R5 is H or CH3, is reacted with 1.2W2.0mol of a dialdehyde of formula IV, where m is 0W4, in a state of a 10W30wt% concentration aqueous solution at a pH of 5.5W7.0 until the viscosity at 25°C and 10wt% concentration becomes 25W100cps. Next, the reaction is stopped by adjusting the pH to 2.5W4.5 by addition of an acid.
