Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the engine output and the fuel consumption and at the same time suppress the generation of harmful exhaust gas component by a method wherein the strong swirl, which is produced by grooves provided at the circumference of a dish-shape main combustion chamber formed at the top of a piston, is used with squash and countersquash to control combustion.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of grooves 4 are formed at the circumference of the dish-shaped main combustion chamber 2 provided at the top of the piston 1 with a certain angle to the direction of the radius at the intersecdion of the groove with the circle composed of the circumference of the combustion chamber. When the piston is raised near the top dead center, the squash produced between the flat part 3 of the piston and a cylinder head is given strong swirl due to these grooves. And according to this thrusting-in swirl flow, the fuel injected from an injector nozzle and the air in the main combustion chamber 2 are fully stirred up and mixed with each other and burnt successively at the portion where the mixing is completed.
