Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve bond strength, by treating an unsaturated carboxylic acid (or anhydride)-modified polyolefin with warm or hot air, or water.
CONSTITUTION: A polyolefin (e.g. PE or PP) and an unsaturated carboxylic acid or an anhydrie thereof (e.g. acrylic acid or maleic anhydride) are melt-kneaded together in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. dicumyl peroxide) to carry out a graft polymn. The resulting modified polyolefin is treated with warm or hot air or water at a temp. within a temp. range of from the Vicat softening temp. of the polyolefin to a temp. which is 25°C lower than the Vicat softening temp. to obtain the desired polyolefin having good adhesiveness. As compared with a conventional redeposition method or extraction method, the above process does not require any solvents and the apparatus therefor is simple. Further, heat energy consumption is decreased, and an inexpensive and high-performance modified polyolefin can be obtd.
