Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the high-purity titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of perfumery and amino acids, in one step and high selectivity, by reacting an aniline compound with ethylene glycol as low-cost raw materials in the presence of a catalyst containing magnesium oxide.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline compound (e.g. aniline, p-toluidine, etc.) is reacted with ethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst containing magnesium oxide (e.g. magnesium oxide supported by silica carrer or by active charcoal) to obtain indole or an indole derivative. The reaction can be carried out in gaseous phase, liquid phase, or a mixed phase of gas and liquid. The reaction temperature is 200W 500°C, pref. 250W400°C.
