The engine is operated for prescribed periods of time alternately near the aimed ignition time and at the ignition times at least at the two points different from each other, and judgement is made based on the operating conditions at the time whether the ignition times are on the lag side or the lead side of the most suitable ignition time and the aimed ignition time is corrected.
