Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent generation of facial distortions after press forming by a method wherein a residual stress suitable for restraining the facial distortions at press worked parts of the cold-workable high tensile strength steel plate is positively imparted to the steel plate.
CONSTITUTION: The cold-workable high tensile strength steel plate for use as a material for outer panels of automobiles is cold-rolled, annealed and temper-rolled. Immediately after these treatments, the steel plate is plastically bent by bending rolls, whereby the steel plate is provided with the residual stress δR which satisfies the expression δR≥0.4(Y.P-24) (where Y.P is the yield point), and then the plate is coiled. The residual stress may be provided by other methods, e.g., by using a special leveler before press forming, by conducting a different-circumference rolling during the temper rolling so as to impart a nonuniform winding characteristic to the plate, by one-side polishing, by one-side heat treatment or by plating. Accordingly, generation of facial distortions such as oil canning and piping effect which impair the appearance after the press-forming are prevented.
