Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce titled porous membrane having a uniform microporous structure and excellent permeability, by removing by extraction, fine silica powder having a specific particle diameter from a PVA membrane containing silica powder and a boric acid or a borate.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a PVA polymer composition prepared by mixing 100pts.wt. of a PVA polymer, average polymerization degree 500W3,500, saponification degree 85W100mol%, with 50W500pts.wt. of fine silica powder, average particle diameter 50ÅW10μ, and 5W30pts.wt. of boric acid or a borate, is extruded through a spinneret into a coagulation bath containing 0.5W250g/l of an alkali or a dehydrating salt, and then coagulated to form a hollow fiber. After subjecting the fiber to heat-treatment or crosslinking treatment, the fiber is soaked in an alkaline aqueous solution at a temperature higher than 40°C to extract at least 90wt% of the fine silica powder. In this way, there is obtained a PVA porous membrane having a porosity of at least 70%, consisting of a layer, 20W80% of the entire thickness of the membrane, of uniform micropores having an average pore diameter (r) of 0.01W50μ, and a supporting layer, 80W20% of the entire thickness of the membrane, having cells having a longituginal length (1) of at least 10μ and an 1/r greater than 5.
