Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a chemical detergent, at a low temperature in a short time and high yield, by the reaction of a formaldehyde with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen fluoride as a catalyst and water or an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A formaldehyde, e.g. p-formaldehyde, α-polyoxymethylene or trioxane, is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen fluoride in an amount of preferably 0.01mol or more based on one mole of the formaldehyde, water and/or an organic solvent, at -50W180°C, to give the aimed compound. Glycolic acid is formed in one stage in the presence of water but a precursor of the glycolic acid is formed in the absence of water; therefore, the precursor is hydrolyzed, to give the glycolic acid. When water is essentially absent, the yield can be improved by the presence of an organic solvent, e.g. acetic or propionic acid, or dichloromethane.
