Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce pumping loss of internal combustion engine, by controlling amount of mixture to be supplied to engine by employing an arrangement capable of changing the lift of suction valve and also the timing for opening and closing the same, instead of conventional controlling method in which amount of mixture is controlled with the extent of opening of throttle valve which is caused by depression of accelerator pedal.
CONSTITUTION: Cam 4, having a profile that is changed with axial displacement of cam shaft 2, is formed integrally on the cam shaft 2 supported by bearings 9, 9 in freely rotatable and axially movable manner, at the portion thereof where cam 4 can be engaged with suction valve 25. The other end 2' of cam shaft 2 is connected to a piston 5 which is slidable in cylinder 6, so that it can be shifted axially by hydraulic pressure acted via hydraulit controller 14. This hydraulic controller 14 comprises a needle valve 16 connected to the accelerator pedal, and hydraulic pressure acted to supply passage 12 is controlled by the shifting of needle valve 16, so as to move piston 5 and to thereby cause axial movement of cam 4. With such an arrangement, timing for closing suction valve 25 is changed and amount of mixture suplied to engine can be resultantly changed.
