Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable plural layer EC elements to be driven by the single power source by laminating a plurality of electrochromic (EC) unit bodies and making common the electrodes of the adjoining EC unit bodies.
CONSTITUTION: In the case of the element composed of, e.g, four EC unit bodies, an electron blocking layer 3a of Cr2O3 or the like is provided in adjacency to a transparent electrode layer 2a of In2O3 or the like, an EC material layer of WO3 or the like in adjacency thereto and further a transparent electrode 2b in adjacency thereto in a substrate 1. The electrode layers 2b, 2c, 2d of the EC unit bodies adjoined with a plurality of a pair of such EC unit bodies are made common and the EC materials 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and electron blocking layers 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d of the adjoining EC unit bodies are symmetrically disposed with respect to the common electrode layers. The respective layers are formed on a substrate through vapor deposition or the like in the order of the figure. Next, the positive pole of a power source 5 is connected to the electrode layers 2a, 2c, 2e and the negative pole to the electrode layers 2b, 2d. In this way, the EC units A, B, C, D color respectively. If the connection is made to opposite polarities, they are decolorized.
