Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve the protection of end faces of optical fibers without decreasing the transmittance effeciency of light by interposing the elastic solid transparent body imparted with an optical guide function between the end faces of the mutually opposing optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:An elastic solid transparent body 4 is inserted between both end faces of the mutually opposing optical fibers. The refractive index of the central part of this transparent body 4 is set at a value higher than the refractive index of the peripheral part 3 to be given photoconductive function. Then, the end faces of the optical fibers may be protected from damages without any decrease in the conduction efficiency of light. In addition, in is possible to make the refractive index of the central part higher than that at the peripheral part by inserting the elastic solid transparent body 5 whose central part assumes convex disc form and compressing this central part by the end faces of the optical fiber. Hence, in this case, the similar effect is obtainable and further the connector which makes the conduction efficiency of light variable depending upon the degree of compression to be obtained.
