Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a low alloy soft-nitriding steel contg. sulfide type inclusions with a major to minor axis ratio of 10 or less and having low mechanical anisotropy, high strength and superior machinability by adding S and Te to a Cr-contg. low alloy steel in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:This low alloy steel contains C; 0.10-0.35%, Si<1.5%, Mn< 2.0%, Cr; 0.50-2.50%, S; 0.010-0.30% and Te<0.10% (Te/S>0.04). It may contain one or more among V, Nb, Zr and Ti 0.50% or less, one or more among Ni, Mo, Cu, W and Co, or one or more among Pb<0.30%, Bi<0.20% and Se< 0.20%. By the above-mentioned composition most of large-sized sulfide type inclusions of 5mu or more in major axis important to machinability have a major to minor axis ratio of 10 or less, resulting in low anisotropy in mechanical properties and superior machinability. This low alloy steel is cut and softnitrided to manufacture machine parts, etc. having high strength and a small strain.
