Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polarizing film easy to tone and having superior moisture resistance by forming a conjugated double bond chain in an acrylic polymer and using the resulting polymer as a polarizing element.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer contg. polyene (conjugated double bond chain) represented by formula II (where n≤m) and obtd. by dehydrohalogenating an acrylic polymer such as poly-α-chloroacrylonitrile or poly-α-chloromethyl acrylate represented by formula I (where X is halogen, Y is cyano or a carboxylic acid ester group, and m is an integer) is monoaxially oriented by about 2W11 times at about 40W180, preferably 50W170°C to form a polarizing film. The dehydrohalogenation is preferably performed in the following two steps: the tirst step at a dehydrohalogenation degree of about 0.05W20mol and the second step at a solid state with heating.
