Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the power consumption and the size of a battery by using external lights such as a natural or room light to read out the behaviour of an optically measuring scale.
CONSTITUTION: A device body 1, which has a rotary disc 4 formed on its circumferencial edge with a number of transparent slits as an optically measuring scale, an index scale plate 5 formed with similar slits, and a light receiving element 6 made of a photo-electric converting element such as a phototransistor, is formed with an external light inlet 2, to which a collimator lens 3 is attached. Thus, the natural light entering from the outside of the body 1 in the direction of arrow is changed through the leans 3 into a parallel beam, which is received by the element 6 through the rotary disc 4, the index scale plate 5 and the like, especially, through their transparent slits. If the rotary disc 4 is turned a preset angle, the quantity of light received is periodically varied and is measured by a meter so that the rotating speed is detected. As a result, the desired objects can be attained without requiring the light emitting lamp as a light source.
