Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure the high compression factor without causing the picture quality lowering of the picture signal, by giving the coding to the information of the density level boundary of the picture signals including the intermediate gradation and quantized. CONSTITUTION:The contents of the coding scanning line of picture signal fV and the reference scanning line are memorized in line memories 11 and 12 each. And memories 11 and 12 supply their contents to discriminator circuit 13. Thus circuit 13 discriminates the following states: state S1 under which the connection is secured from the reference scanning line onto the coding scanning line; state S2 which exists on the reference scanning line but disappears on the coding scanning line; and state S3 which is caused newly on the coding scanning line respectively. Code generator 15 receive states S1-S3, the run length and the new density level signal of state S3 to generate the corresponding codes. These generated codes are supplied to buffer memory 16 to be stored there temporarily. Thus code signal F can be obtained at the output terminal of memory 16. The application is possible to the redundancy suppression of the color picture signal by securing the correspondence between the density level and the kinds of color.
