Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a preform useful in production of an optical fiber with little transmission loss by preburning a glass tube while raising or reducing the press. of a gas fed into the tube to hold the tube diameter constant. On the other hand, when the diameter is smaller than the set value, valve 9 is closed to restrict the outlet of the gas in tube 3 only to the gap of nozzle valve 10, thereby expanding the heated portion of tube 3. By performing this action in the longitudinal direction of tube 3 together with movement of source 5, tube 3 can be shaped to the set value.
