Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the novel optical path switching element which switches the optical paths of the 4-terminal light circulator by interposing optically anisotropic crystal between a pair of double-refractive prisms and letting two orthogoal polarizing components be selectively transmitted.
CONSTITUTION: When random-polarized light in entered from terminals IN-2, IN-4, light 40 is made to light 42 of P polarization of 45° in a double-refractive prism 32 and enters magneto-optic crystal 33, by which it is rotated 45° and light 43 is produced. The light 43 aligns to the S polarization plane in a double-refractive prism 31 and therefore the P polarization component of the light 43 is fetched as light 45 of output in terminal IN-3. Similarly, the light 41 entered from terminal IN-4 becomes S-polarized light with light 42 and when it further rotates 45° and enters the prism 31, it is in alignment to the P polarization plane and therefore it is fetched out as light 44 in terminal IN-1. In this way, the optical paths may be changed to 2-3, 3-4, 4-1, 1-2 between the terminals.
