Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a photographic image, which has high contrast, clearness and resolution, by subjecting a silver halide photosensitive material containing a tetrazolium compound to developing treatment in the presence of such a compound as can effect the development restraining action. CONSTITUTION:A photosensitive material is prpared by adding a tetrazolium compound such as 2-(benzothiazole-2il)-3-phenyl-5-dodecyl-2H or tetrazoliumchrolide to a hydrophilic coloidal layer containing an emulsion of silver halide or a hydrophilic coloidal layer adjacnt thereto in a quntity of about 0.0001 to 10 moles for one mole of silver halide. The photosensitive material thus prepared is developed in the presence of such a compound (or DIR compound) as will react with the oxidizer of the developing agent to liberate a substance having a development restraining action, such as 1-hydroxy-4-(1-phenyl-5-tetrazolyltio)-2'-tetradecyloxy-2-naphthanilide. It is preferred that the DIR compound is contained in the photosensitive material in a quantity of 0.0001 to 10 moles for one mole of silver halide.
