Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the rate of corrosion of corroded object with virtually no damages given to the layer of the corroded object by a simple method of heating one end of a metal piece having the layer of the corroded object on the surface and measuring the surface temperature of the position away from that position.
CONSTITUTION: A sample metal piece 2 having a layer of corroded object on its surface and a metal piece 3 for comparative measurement which is of the same material and size as those of the sample metal piece 2 and is not corroded at all are surrounded by an insulating material 6 and one ends are heated with a thermostatic heating bath 1. The surface temperatures of both metal pieces 2, 3 are respectively measured with thermocouples 4, 5 in the same condition position away by the same distance from the thermostatic heating bath 1. The rate of corrosion is then obtained from the decrease in temperature by making use of the fact that the rate of decrease in surface temperature considerably changes with a slight change in the rate of corrosion.
