Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a welding metal with low diffusive H2 content and also with low O2 content by mixing a definite amount of a melting type flux rich in a metal fluoride with a base flux lean in a metal fluoride, having a specific basicity.
CONSTITUTION: A flux for melting type submerged arc welding which is obtained by adding 3 to 60% a melting type flux containing more than 20% a metal fluoride to a melting type flux(base flux) containing less than 10% a metal fluoride, e.g., CaF2, etc., having a basicity of 0.5 to 2(B), obtained from the formula B = 6.05 [CaO]-6.31[SiO2]-4.97[TiO2]-0.2[Al2O3]+4.8[MnO]+4[MgO]+3.4[FeO] (in molal ratio). The use of the flux gives a welding metal having a high impact strength and a high ductility which makes welding operaton better.
