Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent impact value deterioration of a high tensile chain in its weld zones by reducing the S content of a material high tensile steel and adding Ce in manufacture of the chain by flash butt welding.
CONSTITUTION: The S content of a steel conts. C;0.01W0.48%, Si; 0.05W0.5% and Mn; 0.3W3.5% is reduced to S≤0.015%, and Ce; 0.001W0.1% is added. A specific amt. of one or more out of Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, B, V, Ti, Zr and Nb may be added furthermore. Using the steel a marine chain is manufactured by fhash butt welding. Because of the low S content, sulfide type inclusions are reduced. The add. of Ce facilitates spheroidizing and hardening of residual sulfides. Accordingly the sulfides are spherical without deforming to a long, flat shape in the butted parts of the flash butt weld zones, so no crack occurs along long, flat sulfides by impact.
