TN used for an active matrix type liquid crystal display panel or a small size liquid crystal display panel
In the case of the mold, the liquid crystal molecules are unidirectionally and uniformly aligned at a predetermined pretilt angle with respect to the glass substrate at the interface of the glass substrate, and are twisted by 90 ° between the upper and lower glass substrates. The 90 ° twist alignment state is generally performed by rubbing an alignment film made of a polyimide thin film formed on a glass substrate in one direction using a rayon cloth or the like,
It is obtained by arranging the upper and lower substrates so that their directions are orthogonal.

As shown in FIG. 5, when a voltage is applied to the TN type liquid crystal panel, the liquid crystal molecules 11 which have been twisted by 90 ° begin to respond at a threshold voltage or more, and the twisted alignment state is released to a splay alignment state. That is, the liquid crystal molecules 11 are in a state in which the molecular major axis rises with respect to the planes of the glass substrates 12 and 13. When the liquid crystal molecules 11 are observed while changing the azimuth angle φ at a position inclined by the angle θ with respect to the substrate normal (Z axis), the direction of the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules 11 is the azimuth angle φ
Is not uniform in the direction of. Therefore, the apparent refractive index anisotropy Δn of the liquid crystal molecules 11 changes depending on the direction of the azimuth angle φ, and the birefringence amount Δn · which is the product of the refractive index anisotropy Δn and the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer. d changes. Therefore, a polarizing plate is arranged on the outer surfaces of the upper and lower glass substrates 12 and 13 such that the absorption axis directions 16 and 17 are parallel to the rubbing directions 15 and 16, and when light is incident from the −Z axis direction, the azimuth angle φ The transmission intensity of light changes with the change in the direction of the image, and asymmetry of the viewing angle occurs. This asymmetry of the viewing angle is particularly remarkable in the case of the halftone display, and causes a decrease in the display quality such as an extremely low contrast ratio depending on the direction of the viewing angle or inversion of the display image. For this reason, in recent years, TN
Intensive efforts are being made to increase the viewing angle of a liquid crystal display panel. Means for solving the narrow viewing angle of the TFT-TN liquid crystal display element include IPS, alignment division, and amorphous TN. Of these, I
Although the PS has a wide viewing angle, it cannot be used for a notebook personal computer that requires low power consumption due to low light use efficiency. Further, in the method of dividing one pixel, the number of processes increases, and it is difficult to secure a stable alignment state.

In the above-described amorphous TN mode, liquid crystal molecules are rotated by 90 ° between upper and lower substrates in order to perform switching by the polarization rotation effect of light. For this reason, a chiral agent is added to the nematic liquid crystal to obtain a chiral nematic liquid crystal, and the spontaneous spiral pitch p is set so as to satisfy the relationship of p = 4d with respect to the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer. When a polarizer is arranged on the substrate surface of this liquid crystal display panel so that the absorption axes thereof are orthogonal to each other and a voltage of a rectangular wave is applied, the liquid crystal molecules are in a splay alignment state above the threshold voltage, so that the initial alignment state is different. Disclination lines occur between the areas.
Due to the generation of the disclination line, when viewed from an oblique direction, the viewing angle is increased, but the disclination line becomes a bright line, causing light leakage, and a sufficient contrast ratio cannot be obtained. There is also a problem that the drive voltage is increased due to disclination.

In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises a liquid crystal helical pitch p and a liquid crystal layer thickness d between two substrates each having an electrode. Is a liquid crystal display element in which a nematic liquid crystal layer that substantially satisfies the relationship of p = 4d is disposed, and the liquid crystal responds by applying an electric field to each pixel, and is subjected to alignment treatment on electrodes of the two substrates. An organic polymer film not formed is formed, and a partition wall is provided so as to surround the periphery of each pixel. According to the configuration of this liquid crystal display element, the following functions and effects can be obtained.
That is, when the liquid crystal composition is sandwiched between upper and lower substrates having a surface covered with an organic polymer film that has not been subjected to alignment treatment, the liquid crystal molecules naturally assume an alignment state twisted by 90 ° between the upper and lower substrates. Moreover, since the alignment is regulated by the partition walls formed for each pixel, a disclination line does not occur, and a preferable alignment state having a singular point only at one central portion of the pixel is obtained. This orientation is
Since the orientation is symmetrical around the singular point with respect to the normal direction of the substrate, the viewing angle does not depend on the angle.

Next, the TFT-
A method for manufacturing a TN liquid crystal display module will be described.
First, an unpatterned upper electrode 33 was formed on the upper substrate 35 over the entire pixel region of the lower substrate 36. Here, as a material of the upper electrode 33, transparent indium tin oxide (hereinafter referred to as "ITO") was used.
Next, a lower electrode (pixel electrode) 34 patterned in the shape of a pixel was formed on the lower substrate 36. Next, an alignment film material is printed and coated on the upper electrode 33 and the lower electrode (pixel electrode) 34 so that the thickness after drying becomes 50 nm.
By heating and drying at a temperature of 00 ° C. for 1 hour, an upper alignment film 31 and a lower alignment film 32 which were not subjected to the alignment treatment were formed. Next, as schematically shown in FIG.
On the lower substrate 36, a partition 43 was formed in a portion (metal wiring portion) corresponding to the periphery of the lower electrode (pixel electrode) 34 on the lower substrate 36 by using a 3 μm-high acrylic negative black resist. Next, as shown in FIG. 3, an ultraviolet curable resin obtained by mixing 1 part by weight of glass beads having a diameter of 5.2 μm is used as a sealing material around the upper substrate 35 on which the partition walls 43 are formed.
It was applied in a rectangular shape of 46 mm x 185 mm using a dispenser. The amount of application was adjusted so that the width of the seal 51 was 0.5 mm after the substrates 35 and 36 were bonded together. Next, a plastic spacer 39 having a diameter of 5 μm was sprayed on the lower substrate 36 at a density of 100 pieces / mm 2 . Next, after a required amount of the liquid crystal 30 was dropped on the lower substrate 36, the substrates 35 and 36 were bonded together under a reduced pressure of 100 Pascal.

Therefore, the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer is 5 μm,
A relationship of p = 4d is established between the liquid crystal and the helical pitch p (= 20 μm). By satisfying this relationship, even if the upper alignment film 31 and the lower alignment film 32 have not been subjected to the alignment treatment, the liquid crystal molecules naturally take a 90-degree twist between the upper and lower substrates 35 and 36. In addition, a partition 43 formed for each pixel
Since the alignment is regulated by this, no disclination line is generated, and as shown in FIG. 4, a preferable alignment state having a singular point 22 at only one central portion of the pixel is obtained. Since this orientation is symmetric around the singular point 22 with respect to the normal direction of the substrate, the viewing angle does not depend on the angle. Further, as described above, by using an organic polymer containing polyurethane as at least one component as an alignment film material, liquid crystal molecules can be formed on the upper and lower substrates 3.
An alignment state having a singular point 22 at only one central portion of the pixel can be easily obtained by twisting 90 ° straight between 5, 36. The height of the partition 43 is 3 μm, and the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer is d.
Is 5 μm, so that the height of the partition 43 is equal to the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer.
以上 or more. As described above, when the height of the partition 43 is equal to or more than の of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer, the singular point 22 can be easily formed at one point in the center of the pixel.

Next, after the surroundings were sealed with an ultraviolet curable resin, the whole was heated and left at a temperature of 120 ° C. for 5 hours to produce a liquid crystal panel. Here, the thermal transition point of the polyurethane is 63 ° C., the transition point of the nematic liquid crystal to the isotropic liquid is 90 ° C., and the heating temperature is the thermal transition point of the polyurethane (or the transition point of the nematic liquid crystal to the isotropic liquid). ) Is higher. Finally, polarizing plates 37 and 38 were attached to both sides of the liquid crystal panel to produce a TFT-TN liquid crystal display device.

As described above, in the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, since each pixel is partitioned by the partition, it is not affected by the change in the orientation of the adjacent pixel. For this reason, it is possible to solve the rough feeling on the screen, which is a major problem in the conventional amorphous TN liquid crystal display element. As a result, it is possible to take advantage of the wide viewing angle characteristic, which is a feature of the amorphous TN liquid crystal display element, and the effect of improving productivity by not requiring rubbing.
