Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the disordering of an image and the generation of azimuth difference between the image and a touch panel by comprising a transparent sheet having a refraction factor larger than that of a peripheral medium, and outgoing the light introduced from a surface from a light source toward a rear face side. SOLUTION: The light (f) emitted from a light source 9 permeates a transparent sheet 8 to illuminate a liquid crystal display panel. The light source 9 preferably emits the P-polarization. It is impossible to introduce light to the whole face of the transparent sheet 8 with an incident angle equal to the Brewster αB even thought the light source 9 is used. By mounting the light source 9 just above one end of the transparent sheet 8, the light (f) from the light source 9 is introduced into a central portion of the transparent sheet 8 with the Brewster angle αB. For example, when a length of the transparent sheet 8 is 100 mm, and the refraction factor is 1.5, the Brewster angle αB is 56 degree, so that the light source 9 is mounted at a height of (100/2)/tan (56 deg.)=33 mm from a surface of the transparent sheet.

However, in a portable information terminal, a touch panel is provided in front of a liquid crystal display panel.
Such a lighting device is disposed between a liquid crystal display panel and a touch panel. For this reason, the distance between the liquid crystal display panel and the touch panel is increased by the thickness of the light guide plate, and even if the position displayed on the liquid crystal display panel is pressed from above the touch panel with the input pen, the pen tip does not move due to parallax. The problem of shifting occurs.

[0008] According to the surface light source device of the first aspect,
The light emitted from the light source is incident on the transparent sheet, is refracted by the transparent sheet to the back side, and can illuminate the reflective image display panel disposed on the back side. Therefore, when the surroundings are dark, by turning on the light source, the reflective image display panel can be illuminated and the visibility of the image display panel can be improved. Further, even when the touch panel is overlaid on the image display panel, only a thin transparent sheet is overlaid thereon, so that no large parallax is generated on the touch panel.

(First Embodiment) FIG. 1 is a schematic side view showing a reflection type liquid crystal display device 1 using a surface light source device 2 according to one embodiment of the present invention. The reflective liquid crystal display device 1 includes a reflective liquid crystal display panel 3 and a surface light source device 2. When the polarized light transmitted through the polarizing plate 4 passes through the liquid crystal 5, is reflected by the reflecting plate 6 and passes through the liquid crystal 5 again, the polarization direction depends on the ON / OFF state of each pixel electrode. Is changed, so that the light cannot pass through the polarizing plate 4 or cannot be transmitted. Therefore, characters and pictures can be displayed by controlling on / off of each pixel. When the touch panel 7 is pressed with an attached input pen or the like, the switch at that location is turned on. The touch panel 7 is a transparent sheet, and is disposed so as to overlap the liquid crystal display panel 3. The position, type, and the like of each switch of the touch panel 7 are displayed by the liquid crystal display panel 3 thereunder. Therefore, the touch panel 7 by suggestion
In order to prevent a mistake in pressing, it is preferable that the touch panel 7 and the liquid crystal display panel 3 are as close as possible.

The surface light source device 2 comprises a transparent sheet 8 and a linear light source 9. The transparent sheet 8 is laminated and integrated on the liquid crystal display panel 3 and the touch panel 7. Is provided with a linear light source 9. Therefore, even when the surroundings are dark and external light does not enter,
When the light source 9 is turned on, the light f emitted from the light source 9 passes through the transparent sheet 8 to illuminate the liquid crystal display panel 3, and the image can be recognized by the light f reflected by the liquid crystal display panel 3.

FIG. 2 shows the transmittance and the reflectance of the light f incident from the medium having the refractive index n 1 to the medium having the refractive index n 2 at the incident angle α, respectively, for the case of P-polarized light and the case of S-polarized light. Is shown. Tp and Rp are the transmittance and reflectance of P-polarized light, respectively.
s and Rs are the transmittance and reflectance of S-polarized light, respectively. As can be seen from FIG. 2, when the light f is incident on the transparent sheet 8, if the incident light is P-polarized light, there is an incident angle α B (Brewster angle) at which the reflectance Rp = 0. Even if the incident angle α deviates from the Brewster angle α B , the reflectance Rp of P-polarized light is smaller than the reflectance Ts of S-polarized light.
It is understood that it is desirable to use P-polarized light.

Therefore, the light source 9 that emits P-polarized light is used as the light source 9. For this, a polarizer may be used, or an optical system that can convert natural light into almost 100% linearly polarized light may be used. However, even with a light source 9 for emitting P-polarized light, it is impossible to incident light on the transparent sheet 8 at an angle of incidence equal to the Brewster angle alpha B over the whole surface of the transparent sheet 8 alpha. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 3, the light source 9 is disposed directly above one end of the transparent sheet 8 (a position where the surface light source device 2 does not become large and does not hinder the viewing of the liquid crystal display panel 3). Light source 9 in the center of
Emitted light f is such that incident at an angle of alpha B from. For example, if the transparent sheet 8 is 100 mm long and the refractive index is n 2 = 1.5, the Brewster angle is α
Since B = 56 °, it is understood that the light source 9 may be arranged at a height of h = (100/2) / tan 56 ° = 33 [mm] from the surface of the transparent sheet 8.

As another condition for determining the light source position,
80% light f at the end of the transparent sheet 8 far from the light source 9
If the light is incident on the transparent sheet 8, the incident angle at which the transmittance becomes 80% is about 80 ° as shown in FIG. 2, so that the light source 9 is h = 100 / tan 80 ° from the surface of the transparent sheet 8. = 17 [mm].

(Second Embodiment) FIG. 4 shows a surface light source device 10 for a reflection type liquid crystal display panel according to another embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. In this embodiment, in order to prevent the light f emitted from the light source 9 disposed directly above the edge of the transparent sheet 8 from escaping backward or upward on the opposite side of the transparent sheet 8, the light source 9 is used. Is covered by a reflection plate 11. Further, a mirror 12 for reflecting light f not incident on the transparent sheet 8 or light f reflected by the transparent sheet 8 toward the transparent sheet 8 is provided at an end of the transparent sheet 8 opposite to the light source 9. In the surface light source device 10 shown in FIG.
Is a plane mirror, but the surface light source device 1 shown in FIG.
A substantially cylindrical concave mirror may be used as the mirror 12 as shown in FIG. The light f of the light source 9 irradiating the transparent sheet 8 becomes weaker in inverse proportion to the square of the distance as the distance from the light source 9 increases. However, by using a concave mirror as the mirror 12, a portion far from the light source 9 is preferentially illuminated. In addition, the uniformity of light between the light source 9 side and the opposite side can be improved.

The light f of the light source 9 hitting the surface of the transparent sheet 8 hits the concave / convex pattern 20, is diffused, enters the liquid crystal display panel 3 through the transparent sheet 8, and is reflected by the reflection plate 6 of the liquid crystal display panel 3. Transparent sheet 8 reflected again
And is scattered on the surface of the transparent sheet 8. At this time, the light f passing through the transparent sheet 8 propagates while being totally reflected by the wall 23 around the cell 24 as shown in FIG. 9, so that the light f diffused by the uneven pattern 20 is mixed with the light of the surrounding pixels. Thus, it is possible to prevent the image from being blurred. That is, the light f diffused on the surface of the transparent sheet 8 is guided to a pixel immediately below, and the light f reflected on the liquid crystal display panel 3 is guided to a position directly above the pixel, so that the image is hardly blurred.

(Seventh Embodiment) FIG. 10 is a schematic sectional view showing a surface light source device 25 according to still another embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the density and the degree of the concavo-convex pattern 20 are made to increase gradually as the distance from the light source 9 increases, without affecting the image. By doing so, in the region where the light f becomes weaker away from the light source 9, the amount of light directed downward by diffusion can be increased, and the luminance of the surface light source device 25 can be made uniform.

As shown in FIG. 13, among the light f returning from the liquid crystal display panel 3 directly upward, there is a light f which is shadowed by the prism 27 and is wasted. However, when the inclination of the prism is, for example, 20 degrees, the wasted light f is only 4%, and the image quality is not reduced. (Ninth Embodiment) FIG. 14 is a schematic sectional view showing a surface light source device 29 according to still another embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the prism 2 provided on the lower surface of the transparent sheet 8 is used.
7 are increased as the distance from the light source 9 increases, and the luminance of the surface light source device 29 is made uniform. (Tenth Embodiment) FIG. 15 is a schematic sectional view showing a surface light source device 30 according to still another embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, a microlens array 32 is formed by arranging a cylindrical lens-shaped microlens 31 on the lower surface of the transparent sheet 8. Since the microlenses 31 are provided on the lower surface of the transparent sheet 8, the light f
Is focused on the liquid crystal display panel 3 below the transparent sheet 8.
In particular, by providing the microlenses 31 so as to face the pixels of the liquid crystal display panel 3, the light f of the light source 9 can be collected on the liquid crystal display element, and the light use efficiency can be increased.
