Regarding Internet users. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART Using Internet service providers such as CompuServe, MCI, Prodigy, America On-line, NetCom, or any one of a number of such online services, a number of computer owners and users, individuals. And the company accesses the Internet communication system. This Internet service has grown significantly worldwide in recent years with the introduction of the World Wide Web (WWW), an information location software tool, simply known in the art as the Web. The web is a graphic interface. It facilitates access to world-wide computer-stored data, known in the art as hypermedia, represented by text, audio, graphics, video, or a mixture thereof, based on an index and text search. I do. Access to the web is possible through an increasing number of service providers, including some of the foregoing. Web systems typically feature a software utility called a browser, which assists users in searching for online information. Browsers translate the web's hypertext markup language and provide on-screen graphical interfaces and display fields, including screen buttons and data entries, that help users search, select, view, and transmit information. I do. Browsers also facilitate one user exchanging electronic documents with another user anywhere in the world. Electronic documents on the web can take many different forms, including e-mail (e-mail), voice mail (V-mail), fax, scanned documents, electronically generated documents, software, Sound recording, video recording, and the like. Typically, Internet users who have been granted public access to their databases for commercial or educational purposes use the home page as a gateway to information sources. A home page is a graphical interface that is specific to an individual user, which acts as a table of partial content. For example, a computer manufacturer may set up a home page on the Internet WWW with an active selection area (button) to command control and display product information, prices, system production capacity, and other web locations. Is also good. Buttons on one web page and the like can also control jumping to another web page. The home page is generated in a hypertext markup language. E-mail is an Internet service that is separate from individual homepages. Email differs from home pages and browsers, etc., in that it uses different protocols and languages. CompuServe Information Service, MCI Mail, Genie, America Online, NetCom, and other Internet service providers typically access email through menus and icons that switch control over email utilities. . Because the email gateway does not have direct access to the Internet service, the user cannot access the email through the web server or access the Internet through the email server and cannot browse. Long-distance toll charges are not relevant to e-mail services, as users typically access e-mail by telephone connection to a local e-mail service provider. Prior to the present invention, it would not be possible for a user to access an e-mail box without using the services of the e-mail provider to which he or she subscribed, and therefore would utilize all that the web offers Could not. What is clearly needed is a system that allows Internet subscribers to access their e-mail anywhere in the world using web facilities, independent of the service provider. Such systems employ a form of customized homepage that operates in conjunction with a special gateway interface inserted between a standard Internet server and an electronic document server. The home page in this configuration provides pathways and security barriers through which Internet subscribers can access their mailbox at their email service provider. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an interface for an Internet home page includes an identifier for identifying the home page owner and an electronic document database that includes an electronic document specifically addressed to the home page owner. And an active selection area on the screen. Selecting the active selection area on the screen sets up a control routine that connects the user through an on-screen window to an electronic database containing electronic documents specifically addressed to the home page owner. The homepage owner activates a window on the screen through which to select and view stored documents. Also, in a preferred embodiment, the user is required to execute a security protocol to activate a window on the screen that accesses the specially addressed electronic document. The security protocol may be as simple as a password entered and verified. The specially addressed electronic document may be an e-mail document, a facsimile (fax) document, a voice mail file, or another type of electronic document sent to a particular recipient. The present invention provides a unique electronic document inspection system that can be used from any station that accesses the Internet, regardless of the service provider that controls such access. The present invention provides a means for enabling Internet users to access e-mail and electronic documents specifically addressed to them over the Internet without having to access the Internet service provider to which the Internet user typically subscribes. I will provide a. Advantages include significant savings on charges (long-distance call charges) and convenience for the user. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating the incompatibility of current technology web services with email services. FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating how Internet users access their e-mail remotely using web facilities in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, independent of the provider. FIG. 3 is a sample diagram of a set of windows providing a user interface through a web browser according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 4 is a flow diagram illustrating a sequence of steps for accessing an electronic document via a link feature of a home page according to one embodiment of the present invention. Embodiment FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a communication link between a typical node in a web system and a point showing incompatibility between web services and email as is well known in the art. The first user station 15 includes a computer system 31, a high-speed modem 29, and Internet communication software having well-known elements of communication software, including a browser tool 33 and an e-mail tool 37. A local Internet service provider (ISP) 11, which is typically operated commercially, has a web server 19, an e-mail server 21, and an Internet port 45 for accessing the Internet 43. The e-mail server 21 runs an e-mail program 23 and maintains a set of client mailboxes 25. The remote ISP 13 includes, but is not limited to, a web server 39, an Internet port 47, and an email server (not shown). Web server 39 maintains a set of databases 41, one of which is a database 51 owned by a company named abc. The second user station 17 comprises a computer system 57, a high-speed modem 59, and Internet communication software having well-known elements of communication software including a browser tool 53. User station 17 is referred to in the art as a kiosk, and with respect to user station 17, Internet services are transparent to the user. That is, the user station 17 is directly connected to the Internet 43 by an Internet port 49 using point-to-point (PPP) or serial line interface protocol (SLIP). The file transfer protocol (FTP), document language, gateway interface for e-mail, and the web are so different that users cannot access the e-mail documents by the browser 33 and the e-mail window 37 You cannot even navigate. Three different communication situations are described below to illustrate the differences between web and email communication. To retrieve e-mail documents from one of the mailboxes 25, an Internet subscriber operating at station 15 using computer 31 logs on to ISP 11 by modem 29 using telephone line 27, Call up the email window 37. The subscriber accesses the messages contained in one of the mailboxes 25 using various screen buttons in the email window 25, and observes, edits and organizes the email messages using text fields. And deliver it to a remote service provider. To access the Internet 43, the subscriber operating at station 15 invokes browser window 33 instead of e-mail window 37. Browser window 33 includes buttons, graphics and text fields that allow the subscriber to navigate the Internet and search and display multimedia documents. For example, to access the database 51 at the remote provider 13, the subscriber enters a universal resource locator (URL) for the database 51 in the address field 35 of the browser 33. The subscriber can use the various screen buttons associated with the browser 33 to view or search for information contained in the database 51. It will be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art that there are many possible variations in the configuration for entering a URL for a remote database. The user station 17, described above as a kiosk, allows access to the Internet while away from normal equipment. Such kiosks are located, for example, in places where people are concentrated, such as airport terminals. As described above, the user of the kiosk calls the browser 53, connects to the ISP 13 via the Internet 43, and can access the database 51 belonging to the abc company. However, the kiosk user cannot access the ISP 11 mailbox 25 by the browser 53. Kiosk users can only access their mailboxes by telephone connection to the ISP 11 by dial, which is often a long distance call line. In summary, in the current technology described above, the subscriber of the ISP 11 accesses the mailbox 25 through the ISP's email server or using the ISP's web server, and the remote database 51 (database 51 is one example). And may access a number of other remote databases). However, the same subscriber cannot access the mailbox 25 from the remote kiosk 17 and cannot access the Internet using the ISP's email server. As a result, e-mail subscribers do not have access to everything the web offers. The present invention works with conventional World Wide Web facilities to provide real-time remote access to any type of electronic document, including e-mail. The present invention includes a home page that operates in conjunction with a suitable gateway interface inserted between the Internet server and various electronic document servers. FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating how an Internet user remotely retrieves all types of electronic documents from his mailbox using the Web and system facilities according to one embodiment of the present invention. In the system of FIG. 2, the user station 53 comprises a high-speed modem 61 and a computer system 63 having a web browser 65 and well-known components including PPP or SLIP communication software (not shown). In the system, the kiosk 55 also includes a high-speed modem 105 and a computer system 107 having a web browser 109 and well-known components including PPP or SLIP communication software (not shown). The ISP 51 includes a web server 59 that accesses the Internet 99 through an Internet port 97, and communication software (not shown) that supports communication protocols and languages. Computer system 63 located in user station 53 communicates with web server 59 over modem 61 and telephone line 83 using a communication protocol such as PPP or SLIP. A second ISP 57 physically located far from the user station 53 and kiosk 55 comprises a web server 67 and a set of electronic document servers 69. The web server 67 and the electronic document server 69 both access the Internet 99 through the Internet port 10 1. Each server of the electronic document server 69 runs software supporting a specific application. An e-mail program 79, a fax program 81, a voice mail program 85, and various other programs 87 including video and graphics are shown. Web server 67 runs a specific control routine according to one embodiment of the present invention that supports a set of databases 71. Each database belongs to a different client (or is assigned to or associated with a different client). The single database set 71 includes a home page 73 personalized to a particular client, whereby the software is linked to various lower-level databases maintained by the electronic document server 69. Illustrative of such lower order databases are an email database 89, a fax database 91, a voice mail database 93, and other electronic documents in the database 95. Homepage 73 is generated in hypertext markup language (HTML) like other homepages and has access to databases 89, 91, 93 and 95 through software links as described below. HTML technology is known in the art for a long time, and it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that this part of the present invention can be performed without difficulty by those skilled in the art using known technology. Passages are provided from the web server 67 to the databases 89, 91, 93, 95 by software links programmed into the client's home page. Each link uses a common gateway interface (CGI) to translate HTML into a particular database language. In FIG. 2, CGIs 77, 78, 80 and 82 are shown, which are led to programs 79, 81, 85 and 87 and access databases 89, 91, 93 and 95 respectively. Subscribers use the web facilities to access their home page from anywhere on the globe, and then use a link feature in the home page to access a database of electronic documents. At an access station such as a kiosk, the subscriber can retrieve and read e-mail messages and faxes, listen to voice mail, and receive other types of electronic documents such as video or audio files. If the access station (kiosk) has a printer, floppy drive and other associated devices, the subscriber may make an appropriate copy of the electronic document. 3, an example of an accessible window in a home page for accessing an electronic document using a web browser facility such as web browser 109 in kiosk 55 (see FIG. 2) in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. A typical set 11 1 is shown. The user invokes browser 109 and enters the URL for his home page 73 in field 113 of browser 109. Thereafter, the start signal provides control to search the home page 73 and display it as an interface to data and other web destinations. The operation up to this point is the same as in normal operation and is well known in the art. However, the homepage 73 has on-screen links to electronic documents reserved for the "owner" of the homepage, such as email and fax, as described above with reference to FIG. It is different from the homepage. As an example, the home page 73 of FIG. 3 has a button 117 labeled V-mail for voice mail. By selecting button 117, the user is connected to database 93 (see FIG. 2) via CGI 80 and voice mail program 87. This feature is unique to embodiments of the present invention. The voice mail window 125 is invoked with the usual elements of a voice mail window including, but not limited to, a text field 123 and a set of function buttons 121 and the like. Function buttons 121 allow the user to list, respond to, save, delete, record, and deliver voice mail messages, as is commonly done in such windows. Similarly, in the embodiment of the invention described with reference to FIG. 3, the subscriber accesses e-mail, fax, and other electronic documents using link buttons 118, 120, 122. In another embodiment of the present invention, a traveling Internet user may be provided with another database, such as a pronunciation, spelling checker, or personal multilingual dictionary featuring thesaurus, or any other type of You may use your home page 73 to link to digital data or control routines. Methods well known in the art for restricting access to home pages and databases are implemented. The same method may be used to protect an electronic document database from unwanted access. For example, access to an electronic document database may be restricted by requiring a user to provide a password and a user's name before access to a home page or a particular electronic document database is authorized. Software routines embedded in each of the various electronic document programs 79, 81, 85 and 87 (see FIG. 2) can determine the validity of the entered password. If the password is valid, the user is authorized to access the desired electronic database. If not, a rejection message is displayed in window 123 (FIG. 3). If a user accesses his or her electronic document database from a computer that is not his / her own, certain methods may be implemented to prevent electronic documents from being stored on the peripheral without the permission of the owner. Protecting the database can be made with little difficulty by those skilled in the art by using well-known equipment and techniques. FIG. 4 is a logic flow diagram illustrating a sequence of steps for accessing an electronic document by a link feature of a home page according to an embodiment of the present invention. Initially, in step 123, an Internet user is connected to the ISP by telephone dialing. The ISP may be one of the providers to which the user subscribes (local ISPs) if one or more e-mail links exist for the user, or a provider associated with a kiosk somewhere on earth It is. At step 125, if the provider to which the user subscribes is an ISP, the user must enter the username and password with the dialed ISP, which is then evaluated. Otherwise, there is no need for identification. When logged on, the user configures the web browser at step 127. The browser starts HTML in step 129. The user may branch out of the control coupling 130 in one of several ways. For example, if the user chooses to browse the Internet in step 143, he enters his homepage URL and jumps to step 131 or exits to step 145. If the user sets his home page, he sets up the desired electronic document access system at step 133, thereby setting up the CGI. At this point, a password or another security ID is required. At step 137, the user can view, edit, save, organize and distribute the electronic document. In step 139, the user outputs an electronic document program. In step 140, the user exits the home page, and in step 143 returns to the browser to browse the Internet. Of course, there is no need to output an electronic document program to exit the homepage. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes can be made to the embodiments of the present invention described herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, there are a number of designs used for the home page interface and a number of known methods that provide alternative control pathways for user selection. Programming is also very individual, so there are many combinations of code that perform the same or similar functions. The structure and nature of the electronic document database can also vary significantly. Many similar changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Therefore, it is intended by the inventor of the present invention that the technical scope of the present invention is defined by the following claims.
